Discovered by keen observation and a fair dose of chance
Fortunately by chance a snail farm in Chile noticed that snail handlers had exceptionally smooth hands, and any cuts, scrapes or abrasions to their hands healed unusually quickly and without scars. By the same time a Doctor in Spain observed that snails secrete mucous when exposed to ionizing radiation (X ray and gamma radiation used for cancer radiotheraphy) and it protects them from degenerative effects.
Their curiosity led them to experiment with the substance on human skin, research on what's in it and clinical trials. They confirmed the substance yields scar free healing of injuries, cuts, scrapes and restores skin health after bruising caused by cancer radiation treatments (radiodermatitis) and heals skin even after chemical burns.

The specific structure of GAG chains and their binding proteins influence tumor cell proliferation, metastasis, and cancer progression. GAGs such as heparin, heparan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, dermatan sulfate, and hyaluronic acid serve as key biological response modifiers by acting as (1) stabilizers, cofactors, and/or coreceptors for growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines; (2) regulators of enzyme activity; (3) signaling molecules in response to cellular damages, such as wound healing, infection, and tumorigenesis; (4) targets for bacterial, viral, and parasitic virulence factors for attachment, invasion, and immune system; (5) regulators of neurite outgrowth; and (6) anti-inflammatory agent that limits oxidative damage after tissue injury.
In the snail's body tissues GAGs are primarily located inside granules and in the shell, and are secreted onto the surface as a fluid viscose material. Snail glycosaminoglycan tightly binds divalent copper cations (Cu 2+) and form copper peptides, with skin regeneration properties. The concentration of copper in the snail mucins is notable, but copper peptides have been shown to be active in nanomolar amounts.
